Chapter Seven

Vyraz

“Sir! We’re picking up faint echoes along the boundary between Vector Seven and Vector Eight.”

My eyes snapped open, and I crashed to the floor, coming down hard enough to draw a sympathetic “uuh” from Lieutenant Adao. I uncrossed my legs and rose to my feet.

“I’m very sorry for disturbing you, sir.”

“It’s all right, Lieutenant. Fortunately, my ass broke my fall.” Adao was one of the younger warriors, still in awe of my ability to levitate during meditation. “I’ll come with you to the com station. You can fill me in along the way.”

“It’s not so much sounds we’re picking up as rhythmic pulses, sir,” he explained as I strode through the corridor, with him trailing along a respectful half step behind me. “That’s why we thought they might be worth tracking. Waves traveling through space are normally randomly spaced, with no discernible pattern. But I guess I don’t have to tell you that,” he added.

Embarrassment radiated from him. He’d been lecturing the Archon as though he was the seasoned space explorer and I was the new recruit. I didn’t need my empathic skills to read him. The lad was an open book.

“The other crew members always invite you to join them when they play yaqq, don’t they?”

“Yes, sir, they do,” he said, sounding surprised. “But I don’t play very often. I can’t afford it. I always lose. How did you— Oh, I’m sorry, sir. I’ve never been in the presence of an Archon before. I forgot you know everything.”

“Hardly,” I replied. “But I do have certain abilities. Some of them are gifts, but others are skills. Skills that can be learned.” I glanced at him out of the corner of my eye and sighed. Surely, he wasn’t a warrior. He looked far too young. But then, nowadays, to me they all did. This one was a peak physical specimen. Obviously intelligent, too, or he wouldn’t have been assigned to the most crucial duty station on our ship. “You’ve never been in one of my training sessions, have you?”

“No, sir. I’ve never had the privilege.”

“Speaking of yaqq—you telegraph your hand. You might as well just pass them your money. A warrior never gives the enemy any sign of what his next move will be. I’d be happy to do some one-on-one sparring with you in your free time. Teach you how to cloak. It would probably improve your chances of winning at yaqq, too,” I added.

“Personal training by the Archon? Thank you, sir. It would be an honor.”

We’d arrived at the com station. Word had spread, and nearly every member of our small crew had crowded in.

“Status, Commander?”

The entire room snapped to attention. Instead of saluting, they bowed their heads as one. I didn’t bother with the traditional greeting/blessing, merely inclining my head a fraction in acknowledgement. Unlike the others on board, I didn’t carry a rank. My role as Archon made the need for establishing myself in the military hierarchy unnecessary.

“Archon.” Commander Rhys stood and offered me his chair
